Blake Schaefer


Blake was most recently Portfolio Manager of Global Environmental Finance for Platinum Partners (2011-2016), trading and investing in the European, Asian, & North American markets. Prior to this Blake was Director of Global Environmental Finance at Stark Investments (2006-2009), a multi-billion dollar investment firm, where he helped establish Stark’s London emissions trading facility. Priorto Stark, Blake specialized in Chinese and Indian carbon emission offtake & investment for the European Carbon Fund at IxisCorporate & Investment Bank (now Natixis) in Paris, France (2005-2006). Blake examined the European Emissions Trading Scheme during a Master of Science (distinction) from the University of Oxford, St. John’s College, and holds a Bachelor of Science (honors) and a Bachelor of Arts (distinction) from University of California, Berkeley.

Alex Rau


Alex is founding partner of Climate Wedge LLC, an independent carbon trading and climate finance investment firm founded in 2005. Alex has 15 years of experience in climate finance, carbon markets, and environmental commodities. He has advised & managed direct investments in carbon and related environmental commodity markets for several institutional funds, including a multi-strathedge fund (2011-2015), Inter-American Development Bank (2014-2016), and Cheyne Capital (2005-2009). He also cofounded US carbon credit developer EOS Climate, as well as Ugandan cookstovesdistributor Up Energy, and wrote the original version of the Voluntary Carbon Standard, a widely adopted trading standard for non-Kyoto carbon assets. Alex was previously at PricewaterhouseCoopers’s EnergyCorporate Finance practice in London (2001-2004), has a Ph.D. in physics from Oxford University, B.A. from Cornell University, and is a CFA charterholder.

Lenny Hochschild


As Managing Director at Evolution Markets, the global leader in environmental commodity market brokerage, he has served in a variety of roles including being on Evolution’s Management Team, Head of Evolution’s Global Carbon desk, and founded & managed the Western U.S. Renewable Energy desk. He is the co-chair of IETA’s (International Emissions Trading Association) Western U.S. Working Group and was elected onto the inaugural board of WREGIS (Western Renewable Energy Generation Information System). A noted Environmental Commodity Markets expert, he has been speaker/moderator at numerous conferences over last decade, and quoted in BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, New York Times, Reuters, WSJ. Prior to joining Evolution in 2003, Lenny worked in a variety of commercial tradingand origination roles in the energy and metals business for American Electric Power (AEP) in Columbus, OH (2002-2003), Enron in Houston, TX (2000-2001), Traxysin New York (1998-2000) and Rudolff Wolff & Company in London, England (1995-1998). Lenny received his B.A. with Honors from the University of Rochester.

Mr. Billick was the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Bocage Capital, a San Francisco based commodity hedge fund with over $1BB in assets under management at its peak. Prior to Bocage, Mr. Billick was a Portfolio Manager at Caxton Europe Asset Management (2008-2010). There he created and managed a $400 million global portfolio of commodities securities. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Billick was a Managing Director in the Fundamental Investment Group at UBS, Ltd., where he developed and managed a $1 billion global securities portfolio for the proprietary trading desk. Prior to UBS, Mr. Billick managed a $350 million investment portfolio, primarily in commodity and basic materials industries, at Farallon Capital Management (2000-2005).


John-Austin Saviano is the Managing Partner of High Country Advisors where he serves as a strategic advisor to investment firms and the institutional pools of capital who back them. Previously, John-Austin served as the founding President and Chief Investment Officer of the Berkeley Endowment Management Company (BEMCO) from its inception in 2009 until 2017. John-Austin’s work with endowments began as a part of the founding team that created the investment portfolio for the $6 billion Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation. He also worked as a Senior Consultant at Cambridge Associates. He began his career financing the growth and operations of public and private companies, as both a senior creditor at a commercial bank, and as venture investor. John-Austin earned a B.A. in economics from the University of California, San Diego and an M.B.A. from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and serves on the investment committee for the San Francisco Foundation.


Angelo is the co-founder of Rosetta Analytics, an independent technology start-up using proprietary artificial intelligence technology to model and predict asset prices and returns. Previously, he helped found and manage Blue Diamond Asset Management AG, a hedge fund that trades equity volatility.

Angelo is the “Dissident” columnist for Institutional Investor, where he had the most read opinion columns in 2017, and former columnist for Chief Investment Officer. His column, “The Doctor Is In,” won the American Business Media’s 2016 Jesse H. Neal Award for best commentary. Angelo has also published extensive in other publications, including Pensions & Investments, Healthcare Financial Management, American Indian Culture and Research Journal (UCLA).

Angelo is the author of Environmental Alpha: Institutional Investors and Climate Change (Wiley 2009) and founder and publisher of the Journal of Environmental Investing. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Charter Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association, where he chaired the CAIA Hedge Fund Task Force and is a member of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance. Angelo earned a PhD in Contemporary European Philosophy from DePaul University.
